When the Bible says that God is our Rock in whom we can take refuge, I've always pictured standing safely on a huge rock, with the sea raging around but unable to touch me: "My mighty Rock, my refuge is my God" Ps 62:7.
More recently, I have noticed that most of the verses about God being our Rock talk about taking refuge IN him. For example, "My God, my Rock, IN whom I take refuge" Psalm 18:2.
It's the idea of hiding in the rock, rather than standing on the rock. Hiding in the rock we are protected, not exposed.
I love the verse, "When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I" Psalm 61:2. My Rock is my God and he is bigger than I am. I can hide in him. It's not dark in the Rock as you might expect if you've been caving, because God is light and he is the Rock.
Moses hid in the rock, and what's more, God himself put him there: The LORD said, "I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand" Exodus 33:22.
In this case God was protecting Moses from seeing too much of his glory or he would die. We are protected from everything that threatens to disturb our peace in God, our Rock, and, if we stay there, we can't be touched. He is our safe place in stormy times.
"In you my soul takes refuge...till the storms of destruction pass by" Psalm 57:1.
